A peripheral impeller is slightly different from the typical traditional understanding of a centrifugal pump design. The peripheral impeller only transports the fluid on the periphery of the impeller disk and does not draw fluid into the centre of the impeller. Operating more like a turbine than a centrifugal type pump.
The very close tolerence between impeller and housing means that the peripheral pump is not designed for solid handling in any way. The higher pitch sound from a peripheral pump is a typical characteristic of this type of pump design.
