How To Select Your Pedrollo Pump
Water pumps are relatively simple pieces of equipment and the essentials are really common sense.
Before you try to establish for yourself the correct product to use, please take a moment to think about the following:-
- How much water do you need to pump and how quickly? Normally you would express this in litres per minute.
- How high is the highest point to which the water needs to be delivered? Normally expressed as head in meters.
- Where wll the water be pumped from? Normally a JoJo or other type of tank but sometimes from a sump under ground or a river or well?
- What is the power available to drive the Pedrollo electric water pump.
- Another aspect which needs to be considered when purchasing a water pump is how one will control the unit. Typically an automatic controller which will turn the pump on when a faucet, tap or valve is opened. Pedrollo controllers offer an added benefit in that the pumps will not run if the suction tank does not have sufficient water level. This feature ensures that water pumps do not run dry and damage the mechanical seals which would result in major losses and repair costs. In South Africa, the Pedrollo Pump is a premium brand and considered to be a quality, long lasting, efficient and cost effective purchase.
- Our site aims to provide detailed information on each product and useful tips on how to select and design a pump system to satisfy your design requirements.
Once you have that information, you are good to go.

Pedrollo JET Wellpoint Pumps

Water is the scarcest commodity on the continent of Africa and is one reason for the increase in pump sales as the South African water situation becomes more pressing.
Pedrollo self Priming pumps are extremely popular in areas where the the water table is close to the surface (within 6 to 7 meters)
Pedrollo offers it’s unique self priming pump with a jet priming system. Once primed this unit operates by drawing water from a well and returning 30% of the flow through a venturi jet directly into the eye of the impeller. This Pedrollo pump design revolutionised the pump industry and launched the pedrollo self priming pump range for shallow wells, sometimes set up as wellpoints. These are very popular in Cape Town and the Western Cape in general.

Reading a Pedrollo Pump Curve

How to Read a Pedrollo Pump Curve
Selecting the right Pedrollo pump starts with understanding the pump curve. This graph tells you exactly what a pump can deliver — matching your required water volume (flow rate) against the height or pressure it needs to overcome (total head). Get this right and your pump will run efficiently for years. Get it wrong and you risk an underpowered system or a burnt-out motor.
The Two Key Axes
Every Pedrollo pump curve has two axes:
Vertical Axis — Head (H) measured in metres. This represents the maximum height or pressure the pump can push water against. The higher the number, the more powerful the pump.
Horizontal Axis — Flow Rate (Q) measured in litres per minute (l/min) or cubic metres per hour (m³/h). This tells you how much water the pump delivers at any given pressure.
The Performance Curve
The bold curved line on the graph slopes downward from left to right. At the far left the pump delivers maximum pressure but no flow. At the far right it delivers maximum flow but no pressure. Your ideal operating point sits somewhere between these two extremes.
Power and Efficiency
Most Pedrollo pump curves also show:
Absorbed Power (kW) — how much electricity the motor consumes at each operating point.
Efficiency (η%) — the sweet spot where the pump delivers the best performance for the least energy. Always aim to operate as close to peak efficiency as possible to protect your motor and reduce running costs.
Finding Your Duty Point — Step by Step
Your duty point is where your system requirements meet the pump’s performance. Here’s how to find it:
Step 1 — Calculate Total Dynamic Head (TDH) Add the vertical height the water needs to travel (static head) plus friction losses through your pipes and fittings. This gives you your total head requirement in metres.
Step 2 — Determine Your Flow Rate How many litres per minute do you need? A garden irrigation system might need 30 l/min. A commercial building might need 200 l/min or more.
Step 3 — Plot the Intersection Find your head value on the vertical axis and your flow rate on the horizontal axis. Draw lines from each until they meet on the graph.
Step 4 — Evaluate the Result
- If the intersection falls on or just below the pump curve — the pump is a good match
- If it falls above the curve — the pump cannot generate enough pressure for your application
- If it falls too far to the right — the pump may cavitate, overheat, and fail prematurely
